Dyson
Compact
without the compromise
High performance Dyson vacuum
technology: Concentrated.
Rising
populations, urban living, and less space have all lead to us living in more
compact spaces. Making the most of every inch is key to compact living. It’s not just about
how you furnish your pocket-sized apartment; keeping a small space clean and
tidy can help to create a more welcoming environment.
For British technology company
Dyson, developing solutions for smaller spaces is a core part of their £1.5m a
week research and development programme. Fitting on an
A4 sized piece of paper, DC48 is engineered to be Dyson’s smallest, quietest
Ball™ vacuum cleaner yet.
James Dyson, Company founder
and inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner and bladeless fan, notes that
“globally attitudes to technology are starting to design. People want better
technology. Technology that makes their lives easier, and all in more compact,
energy efficient forms.” The technology entrepreneur challenged his 1500 strong
engineering team to find a solution.
The secret behind the DC48 is
the Dyson digital motor - half the size of conventional motors with twice the
power. It’s controlled by a microprocessor that makes 6000 decisions a second
in order to optimise performance. This is a miniature revolution. With the tiny
motor, the machine weighs in at just 2.7kg.
Powerful but quiet: Engineers were
challenged to develop a powerful yet quiet vacuum cleaner. Acoustic engineers developed
simplified airways in the floor tools, funnelling the turbulent air downwards
to dampen the sound. They adjusted the motor’s orientation, and smoothed the
airflow inside the vortex fingers of the cyclone to reduce sound from the
machine.
Ball™ technology: The machine is light
to pull, can pivot on the spot, and follows obediently without snagging on
corners. It has a low centre of gravity for negotiating tight turns and getting
around furniture. There are over 100 components arranged in the ball including
the motor, ducting and 5 metres of cable.
Improved
floor tools: These have been re-engineered to improve pick-up
and sound quality, and reduce weight. Simplified airways decrease noise levels
and a self-tightening mechanism keeps the brush bar stable. A dust capture
channel prevents dirt from escaping back to the floor, increasing pick-up. The
new configuration of carbon fibre filaments and nylon brushes removes fine dust
from hard floors and ground-in dirt from carpets.
Availability: DC 48 is available in Rustan’s Makati, Century City Mall, Makati, Robinsons Appliance, Robinsons Magnolia,
Abenson Alabang and Rustan’s Shangri-La. Retail price is Php 45,000 and available in Sprayed Satin Yellow.
Notes to Editors:
Prototypes: Over 150 prototypes were developed including 35 full machines.
Testing: New test rigs were
developed to assess the machine’s performance on different floor types found in
homes, including variants of carpet, hard floors and
tatami mats.
Patents: DC48 has 79 registered patents and 46 patents pending.
Hygienic bin emptying: DC48 has a trigger-bin emptying system. So
with the press of a button, dust and dirt can be emptied directly into the bin.
Bin capacity: DC48 can hold up to 0.5 litres of dust and dirt.
Size: DC48’s body is ultra
lightweight–weighing 2.7kg with the turbine head, 2.8kg with the motorised
floor tool.
Guarantee: The machine comes with a five-year parts
and labour guarantee.
About
Dyson: One third of Dyson people are engineers and scientists. Dyson has
in-house expertise in fluid, mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical, acoustic
and software engineering and is thought to be the only vacuum cleaner
manufacturer with an in-house microbiology team.
Dyson invests over £1.5
million a week on research and development; this will increase by 20% a year
for the next five years. Dyson has
doubled the number of engineers employed at the Wiltshire RDD headquarters in
the past two years.
Cutting the cord for good:
Dyson’s DC62 cordless vacuum packs the same punch
as a full size vacuum
Forget pesky cords and bulky cleaners. The latest
Dyson Digital Slim™DC62 vacuum is lightweight, cordless, and packs the same
power as a mains vacuum cleaner. With 20 minutes of powerful suction, DC62 is light and easy to manoeuvre between high, low and hard to reach
spaces. No more fiddling about with plugs or
tripping over cords. Simply remove from the docking station and go.
James Dyson said, “Our digital
motors create new technological possibilities. The V6 motor is faster and stronger than its predecessor with a higher power
density; giving DC62 the performance of a mains powered machine – without being
tethered to the wall.”
Integrated motor technology: the new V6 motor was engineered specifically for this machine. One and a
half times more powerful than the previous motor, it draws more power from the
battery source. Nothing wasted.
2
Tier Radial™ cyclones: 15 cyclones work in parallel across two tiers to capture fine
dust. Dyson engineers ensured an equal flow of air throughout the
cyclone pack, by engineering the airways, to guarantee constant centrifugal
forces and high dust separation.
Tough on dust and dirt: a newly configured motorhead tackles dust and dirt on any surface.
Carbon fibre antistatic bristles reduce the build-up of static charge, aiding
capture of fine dust on hard floors. Nylon bristles work totrap ground-in dirt
from carpets.
Light, versatile and easy to store: a
small, light, power dense motor in the hand, instead of at the floor, makes it
easy to cleanup top, down low and in between spaces. The lightweight aluminium wand can be detached
for stairs, upholstery, cars and other compact spaces. And storage is hassle free with a wall mounted
docking station.
